When you step into a cool, air-conditioned room after being out in the sun all day, you sometimes wonder how people lived without it. Once you have air conditioning, it is hard to go imagine going back.
It is important to keep your air conditioner running smoothly so you don’t have to worry about missing out on cool comfort in your home.
Specifically for TOSOT Mini Split air conditioners, there are some important maintenance tips to keep in mind so your air conditioner runs for years to come.
Mini split systems are usually installed in rooms where you spend the most time or are not covered adequately by your home’s central HVAC system, so you want to ensure that your unit is always running at peak efficiency. This will not only keep you comfortable but also save you money from your unit working harder than it needs to be.
Annual Maintenance
Although all air conditioning systems benefit from regular maintenance, keeping your mini-split system properly maintained is extra important.
It is important to clean the condenser coils on your outdoor unit. Coils can become clogged with dirt and debris over time which will reduce the cooling efficiency of the unit.
To clean your mini-split condenser coils, after shutting your unit off, you can either spray them with condensed air or spray a mild household detergent solution to remove debris.
If using compressed air, it is important not to blow the air at an angle as the coils are thin pieces of metal than can be bent or warped easily.
You may have noticed a similar phenomenon on the outside of a standard window AC unit when the coils get bent. Not only does it damage the appearance, but it also reduces the cooling efficiency of your unit, so take care not to bend the metal if possible.
If using a household detergent solution, you can rinse the coils off with a garden house after spraying to remove some of the cleaning solution.
If you are uncomfortable with cleaning the coils yourself or don’t want to risk damaging your unit, it may be worth contacting your local HVAC company to see if they are willing to come out and do the cleaning for you. Most companies offer some type of promotion or discount for spring cleaning and may even throw in an inspection with their service, so it never hurts to ask.
Long-Term Storage
If you are going to disconnect your TOSOT mini-split for a long time, for example, if it is installed in a cabin or vacation home that is not used year-round, you should follow the long-term storage plan outlined in your user manual. We’ll put it below for reference.
- Disconnect the unit from the power supply.
- Clean the filter and let dry before reinstalling
- Wipe off the case with a soft cloth to remove dust and debris
- After the filter is dry and reinstalled, run the unit on the FAN mode for at least 8 hours to dry out the indoor unit's internal components completely.
- Remove the batteries from the remote control to prevent corrosion.
Following these steps will help ensure that your unit is ready to roll when you turn it on again in a few months.
Preseason Maintenance
If it has been a few months since you last turned on your mini split, please do the following steps before you power it on for the first time.
- Check whether the air inlets and outlets are blocked
- Check whether the plug and socket are in good condition
- Check if the filter is clean
- Check if batteries are installed in the remote control
- Check if the unit is leaking any refrigerant or water
