Winter Care Tips for Your Mini-Split System

During winter, freezing temperatures can put additional strain on your mini-split system, potentially leading to reduced performance or even malfunctions. To ensure your split system operates efficiently when you need it most, proper maintenance is essential. Here are some effective ways to keep your mini-split in optimal condition throughout the colder months.

Protect the Outdoor Condenser from Snow

Snow accumulation on the outdoor unit can block airflow, making it difficult for the system to draw in air and heat your home. This can significantly impair its ability to provide warmth during winter.

To avoid this, position the outdoor unit under a protective structure, such as a roof or awning, to shield it from snow. Additionally, regularly inspect the unit after heavy snowfall and remove any snow to maintain its functionality.

Raise the Outdoor Unit Above Snow Levels

While a cover can shield the top of your outdoor unit, snow on the ground may still cause issues. If the snow drifts become high enough, the unit could draw in snow, forcing the system to work harder and reducing its heating efficiency.

Mounting the outdoor unit at least two feet above the ground is recommended to keep it clear of ground-level snow and ensure optimal operation.

Activate the Defrost Mode

Many mini-split ACs have a defrost mode to prevent ice buildup on the condenser coil. Without this feature, moisture on the coil can freeze in sub-zero temperatures, hindering performance and potentially causing damage.

Make sure to enable the defrost mode during winter. This function allows the system to automatically remove frost, ensuring it continues to operate smoothly and efficiently.

By following these maintenance tips, you can help your mini-split system handle the challenges of winter weather. If you need further suggestions, feel free to contac us at support@tosotdirect.com. We are happy to assist!
