Team TOSOT’s Favorite Essential Oils for Humidifier Aromatherapy

When we designed our Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier last year there was one feature our teams agreed on that we couldn’t live without: essential oil aromatherapy.

Since the humidifier already is producing a fine mist of water to add humidity to the air, we wanted to add the ability to add essential oils to this water mist so we could give customers the added benefit of aromatherapy with their humidifier.

In case you didn't know, aromatherapy is a type of alternative medicine that uses concentrated plant extracts to support health and well-being.

You might think that aromatherapy is just a new way of using candles, but there are many differences between a scented candle and essential aromatherapy. The biggest difference is that when you burn a candle, smoke and soot is released into the air which can damage your walls or furniture and impact the air quality in the room.

When using essential oil from reputable brands, they are completely safe to breathe in because essential oils are simply extracts made from natural plants.

Even if you do not believe all of the health claims related to aromatherapy, it is hard to deny that they smell so, SO good when you blast them through the air with your cool mist humidifier.

In preparation for National Fragrance Day on March 21, we asked our team to share their favorite essential oils they use on a regular basis.

Tea Tree - Carolina

“I love the smell of it, and it can also be used to fight infections and boost immunity. That’s especially important as we reach the end of cold and flu season”

Possible Benefits of Tea Tree Oil

  • Oily skin

  • Inflammation

  • Infection, cuts, and wound healing

  • Acne reduction

Eucalyptus - Lindsey

“Did your parents ever give you Vicks Vapor Rubs when you were sick as a kid? One of the main ingredients in that is eucalyptus, so I use that every time I can feel a cough coming on. It’s a fantastic decongestant when it is inhaled through water vapor.”

Possible Benefits of Eucalyptus Oil

  • Silence cough and reduce congestion

  • Insect repellent

  • Faster wound healing

  • Refresh breath like a mouthwash

  • Treat cold sores

Jasmine - Kristine

“Jasmine is one of the main scents in Chanel No. 5, my favorite perfume, so using it in my humidifier is kind of like getting a spray of perfume in my room 24/7.”

Possible Benefits of Jasmine Oil

  • Antidepressant and mood booster

  • Antiseptic and antibacterial

  • Aphrodisiac for a romantic evening

  • Sedative for more relaxing sleep

Peppermint - Amany

“I love the minty smell when I am working at the office, it makes me feel more focused and zoned in on my work. If I am the first one to work in the morning I make sure to add a few drops of peppermint to the oil tray in our office humidifier so we can all get some increased productivity!”

Possible Benefits of Peppermint Oil

  • Relieve digestive discomfort and reducing nausea

  • Relieve headache pain

  • Boost mood and increase productivity

  • May reduce skin itching

Chamomile - Candice

“I don’t always feel like making chamomile tea at the end of the day, so the scent is a good way to help me relax when i get home from work. I’ve added a few drops to the bath, but I think it works way better in the humidifier.”

Possible Benefits of Chamomile Oil

  • Relief of indigestion, nausea, or gas

  • Wound healing, including ulcers and sores

  • Anxiety relief

  • Easing skin conditions like eczema or rashes

  • Anti-inflammation and pain relief for conditions like back pain or arthritis

Lemongrass - Jane

“This can be really strong if you use too much, but I like to use lemongrass in my humidifier. It has this really fresh, earthy scent that makes the room feel brighter in the middle of winter.”

Possible Benefits of Lemongrass Oil

  • Antibacterial and antifungal properties

  • Antioxidant potential

  • May help relieve nausea

  • Relieve headaches and migraine

  • Loaded with rich antioxidants

  • Anti Inflammatory properties

  • May benefit neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s

Lavender - Jacob

“I’m a big fan of lavender. I like to use it before bed to help me relax after a long day. It’s kind of like a Pavlovian response at this time: whenever I smell lavender, I can instantly feel myself getting drowsy. We don’t use it at the office any more, especially after lunch.”

  • Promote calmness and induce sleepiness

  • Reduce stress and anxiety

  • Potent sleep aid

  • Manage side effects of cancer treatment by boosting mood

  • Alleviate anxiety

  • Lower blood pressure

  • Manage anxiety

There you have it! From Team TOSOT to you, we hope that you enjoy some of our top picks for essential oils in your ultrasonic cool mist humidifier. Although some of the health benefits are not scientifically proven, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the uplifting smell of peppermint or calming smell of chamomile in your own humidifier.

As long as you add essential oils to the oil tray on the back of the unit instead of directly to the water tank, you should be able to use your TOSOT humidifier for aromatherapy for years to come.
